White Awake’s growth into
Comrades Education
During our first 10+ years as White Awake, we focused on the need for class-based antiracism programming for white people grounded in the curiosity and compassion of mindfulness traditions.
While we will continue to hold caucus-based programming for white people and/or folks with European descent, after the Study & Action for Palestine programming of 2024 it became clear the we had more to offer. We wanted to bring our work to a broader, multi-racial audience under a more inclusive name and brand.
Comrades Education will continue to provide holistic, antiracist, anticapitalist programming for the general public … now in the context of a more inclusive name and an expanded mission.
We hope you find a place for yourself in one of our upcoming courses.
Why Comrades?
Comrades describes the relationship between people who are on the same side of a common struggle - people who are committed to a common cause. For our organization, this word embodies joy and discipline united by a vision of what the world could be if we took care of one another, made common cause, had one another’s backs.
“Comrades” comes from the root word “camaraderie” or “comradery”, which means “a spirit of friendship and community between two people or a group of people.” We hope to build this spirit within all of the work that we do, as it is this experience of connection and the awareness of mutual interest, or the common good, is a vital element in the creation of a better world.
Join us and explore what a sustainable, life affirming society - based on relationship and care - might look like if ordinary people, all over the world, worked together to as comrades to make this change.
About our logo
Our logo is built around elements of a quilting block, referencing this craft and folk tradition that has a long history of resistance within the United States and is a profound metaphor for comradery in action (many pieces coming together to form a whole!)
We have incorporated a stylized rose in the design as a reference to love and friendship that has commonly be used by anticapitalist, socialist and/or labor organizing traditions of the past and present.
